Background of the study
Instagram memes have become a vibrant reflection of online linguistic innovation in Nigeria. These memes combine visual imagery with creative textual elements, producing new linguistic forms that resonate with diverse audiences (Okafor, 2023). The succinct and humorous nature of memes encourages users to experiment with language, leading to the development of novel expressions, puns, and wordplays that deviate from conventional usage. As digital platforms drive language evolution, Instagram memes serve as a microcosm for observing how humor and creativity facilitate rapid lexical change. The study explores how meme culture influences linguistic innovation, examining the processes of abbreviation, phonetic alteration, and semantic reinterpretation embedded within meme texts (Ibrahim, 2024). By analyzing a range of memes, this research aims to document the emergence of new linguistic trends and assess their broader impact on digital communication in Nigeria. Statement of the problem
Despite the prevalence of linguistic innovation through memes on Instagram, there is limited systematic research examining their impact on Nigerian language use. Existing studies have focused on meme popularity and visual aesthetics, often neglecting the linguistic creativity that drives these innovations (Chukwu, 2024). This gap prevents a comprehensive understanding of how online platforms contribute to language evolution. The study seeks to fill this void by analyzing the textual content of Instagram memes to uncover patterns of linguistic innovation and assess their implications for broader communication trends. The absence of detailed linguistic analysis in meme research necessitates a focused investigation into these phenomena (Okafor, 2023).
